Recovery (Part 2): 5 Essential Techniques to Optimize Recovery

Recovery refers to techniques and actions taken to maximize your body’s repair. Once you understand the role of recovery as part of your fitness regimen, you can consider these five essentials to optimize your recovery.

1. Rack up those Zzzz:

Get into bed before midnight and get 7-10 hours of undisturbed sleep. Sleep is essential for the structural recovery of your body, your mental wellbeing and your hormonal balance.

2. Put in the goodness:

Hippocrates famously said, “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. Fill your body with friendly fresh foods both as post-workout recovery and throughout the day in order to increase your performance. Be systematic in your nutrition and eat for recovery!

3. Two parts H and a little bit of O:

Water helps all our functions. Keep hydrated. It helps with a more efficient uptake of nutrients, lowers levels of stress on the heart, and improves your skin tone and hair quality.

4. Active Recovery:

Include some form of active recovery in your routine, especially if you are in dire need of daily activity. Here are some examples:
•   Self-myofacial release (foam rolling)
•   Stretching
•   Breathing exercises
•   Walking / Hiking
•   Swimming
•   Light weight-baring exercises
•   Rowing

Remember, this is for recovery. Take the ego out of the exercise!Enjoy your life:

Finally, life is short and you are here to enjoy the ride. When you think about why you are training I hope it involves the goal of increasing the general enjoyment of your daily existence through attending to matters of the body and mind. Take the time to break your routine. You are the master of your regimen.
